This post is written by Devon Biroczky! The Second Act
A couple of weeks ago, I was invited by STXFilms to attend a screening and junket of Second Act, a new comedy starring Jennifer Lopez as Maya, a woman in her 40’s wanting to prove that street smarts are just as valuable as book smarts. Second Act is out in theaters on December 21st, so make sure to set some time aside to go check it out!
The interview we attended was such a great experience. Below are the three who we got to speak to:
Jennifer Lopez (“Maya”)
Leah Remini (“Joan”)
Peter Segal (Director)
One of the biggest plot points in the movie is that women over the age of 40 still have so many exciting things to look forward to. When a member of the media asked Jennifer Lopez what inspired her to be a part of this, she explained, “Kind of infusing all of these beautiful themes of, your life is not over, you get to reinvent, you get to evolve, you get to have another day every single day you wake up. That was really the basis of this film. And then kind of putting all these colorful characters together to tell this story that, well, it’s not over ‘til it’s over at the end of the day.”
Leah Remini and Peter Segal both also took a minute to talk about how Leah and Jennifer’s real relationship is what we see on the screen when we watch this movie. Leah says, “What you’re seeing is just me being me, and then Jennifer reacting to Leah being Leah, and he [Peter Segal, director] allowed it.” Watching the entire movie, you can really and truly see and feel the chemistry between both Leah and Jennifer. It’s actually one of my favorite parts in the film because you can see one of them throwing a joke at the other and the other throwing it right back like it is completely natural, which it is. There’s one scene in the movie that I won’t spoil for you right now, but Peter refers to it as “the slapping scene,” and he also tells us that it might have gone a bit further than he was planning, but it was “them.”
During the interview, somebody had come along and brought all three of them glasses of water. Jennifer’s glass had a lime on the rim of the glass, whereas Leah’s and Peter’s did not. All three of them started joking around back and forth about it and it proved right then and there that they all really do have that natural chemistry and friendship that you see on the screen, and it was just so great to see.
Again, a huge thank you to STXFilms for the invitation for this interview and the screening of the movie! When this movie comes out in theaters everywhere on December 21st, definitely go see it as soon as you can! If you haven’t seen the trailer for Second Act yet, check it out below!
