We watch the sunset from the Huntington Beach pier every Christmas eve. It’s something I’ve done since I was about 7 years old. When this tradition started it was just my mom, my little brother and I. Then my boyfriend joined us, then my kids… one by one. Then my brother stopped coming and a few months ago my mom moved out of state. Today, Casey has to work. So today it’ll just be the kids and I. This year will prove to be a testament to tradition and what I hold important about the meaning of Christmas.
To me, watching the sunset is more than mere tradition. As the sun sets and the waves crash in, I use that time to reflect about the year that has passed. A sort of New Year’s resolution of sort. A kind of emotional let go if you will.
The waves pull from the beach. Pull out the people and experiences I want to let go.
The waves flow to the beach. Flowing in the hopes for the year to come.

I hope you keep the tradition….would love to sit here thinking of you all being there. One day I hope that your brother re-joins you, I hope you don’t give up hope either.
Alas….I know that at some point we all choose our own traditions, much like I did when I began this one with you & your brother, I cherish it and you’ll never know how much I miss sharing it with you & your hubby, the grands and your brother.
Hugs.Merry Christmas Eve.
