The future of renewable energy production is here and thanks to solar energy we can not only save money on our electric bill, we can help conserve Earth’s limited resources. Traditional electricity is a secondary energy source which means that we get it from the exchange of other primary sources of energy, like coal, natural gas, oil, nuclear power and other natural sources. Unlike traditional energy, solar energy is created from a renewable source (the sun!) and is a great big, unbound-less resource that can provide enough energy to run your entire home.
Although solar energy has been around for sometime, it is still widely misunderstood. One common mispersepction is that installing solar energy into our homes has a very high upfront cost. However, thanks to companies such as Sunrun solar service who invented solar service we now have a way to get solar on our roofs without the high upfront cost and hassle of ownership.
There are two options for going solar:
Purchasing a Solar System
When a homeowner purchases a system, there is a high upfront cost, and the homeowner is often responsible for shopping for a system or installer, managing the installation, insuring the system, completing the paperwork for tax rebates and credits, monitoring and maintaining the system, replacing expensive parts, etc. This can be a headache for the homeowner, which is why most homeowners choose to go solar with a solar lease provider.
Using a Solar Service Provider
Leased solar (also called a “PPA” or “third-party owned solar”) allows homeowners to go solar with little or no upfront cost. The solar lease provider purchases the equipment, installs it on your roof, and monitors and maintains the system throughout the life of the agreement. The homeowner pays a low rate for the electricity the system produces. With leased solar, homeowners can go solar with little or no upfront cost. The homeowner still receives a monthly electricity bill that is lower than what they currently pay to the utility. The cost of the monthly payment depends on a variety of factors, including tiered electricity costs in your area, the size of the system required on your home, rebates offered, etc.
Sunrun installs, insures, monitors and maintains a solar system that is designed specifically for you and your home. You just pay a low, locked-in rate for the electricity that the panels produce. And Sunrun gives you control over your electricity costs and protects you against unpredictable electricity rate increases!
We recently purchased a new home and I am seriously considering installing a Sunrun solar service system. If I can save money and save the Earth’s valuable resources – why wouldn’t I? And we can enter to win a Nest Learning Thermostat on Sunrun’s Facebook page!
