Funny Mom Blog contributor Heather has been very busy lately! She and her son went to the Scarium of the Pacific at the Aquarium of the Pacific a few weekends ago for The Funny Mom Blog. We love Heather and we love reading her posts, I have never been to this event and I was dying to hear how the annual Halloween Scarium of the Pacific 2014 event was. Read her recap below!
We’ve been to the Aquarium of the Pacific and enjoyed it A LOT, so when Funny Mom, Desiree Eaglin offered the opportunity for my family and I to stand in for her family at the Scarium of the Pacific 2014, we pounced!
My little guy puts up a good front, but really, he’s leery of the scary aspects of Halloween. He’s one of those that’ll laugh when he sees something scary, then shiver and have nightmares as his imagination goes wonky. The Scarium of the Pacific embraced the spirit of Halloween while being super family friendly. There was a costume contest, pumpkin decorating contest (most of them totally pinterest worthy!), crafts, Halloween slanted shows along with their regular displays of sea life and the aviary. We explored everything making sure we hit up our faves like the sharks and the sea lions. This was the first time we were both brave enough to touch the jellyfish bonnets. It was like petting a blob of gelatin.
Did you know that there’s a free booklet that not only informs of locations of attractions, but that is educational and interactive where you can emboss a page from each section as you discover it? Oh yeah…we totally did that! It was like a treasure hunt. And, it was like giving stealth science lessons…BONUS! By the time we finished our ‘treasure hunt’, played on the ship in the play area getting good and wet and then drying off in front of the shark shaped air blaster, the craft tables were about to close up. We were able to get a few coloring pages and still make it in time to watch the last show of the day in the huge viewing aquarium. We had seen Darth Maul roaming around a few times during the afternoon, so we were super surprised to see him in the tank, light saber and all! Another diver did pumpkin carving UNDER WATER! Funny that the fish didn’t seem phased by their presence, but the crowd watching the show, including us, was mesmerized and loved it! The divers even posed at kid level in the tank so the kids could have their pictures taken with them.
Our day inside the aquarium wrapped up in the gift shop with a new book and a tiny stuffed shark, but the expedition was not complete until the sculpture fountain outside had been admired and the little guy and I took a few minutes to enjoy the sunset over the water with boat masts shadowing the horizon.
What a great stress free day! We got to kick back and just enjoy the wonders of what lies below the oceans’ surfaces, some Halloween fun and to enjoy each others’ company. I relish that kind of time making memories with my kiddo. What a way to set the mood for Halloween!
