Walking Amongst the Beauty
One of our favorite spring time activities is visiting the butterflies during the annual Butterfly Jungle exhibit at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Walking amongst the hundreds of free-floating butterflies is truly a magical experience that I look forward to every year. Thankfully, the kids seem to enjoy it almost as much as I do. Or perhaps they just like dressing up in their brightest neon colors and donning their butterfly wings out in public, I can’t be sure. We were invited as members of the media to the Butterfly Jungle, all opinions are our own.
Curating the Beauty
Each year the San Diego Zoo Safari Park goes to extreme measures to gather unique and beautiful butterflies from around the world. The embeded video below demonstrates just a small clip of their hard work.
Magic to the Max
Perhaps it’s because my youngest is just a tad bit older this year, or perhaps it’s because we had to wait in line for almost an hour to see the Butterfly Jungle, but it seems that I was able to appreciate the amount of effort the San Diego Zoo Safari Park puts into creating such a magical experience for its visitors. I must be honest and say that having a 3 year old that knows to lookout for butterflies on the ground so she doesn’t step on them and knows to not climb into the landscape was a lot more enjoyable than a 1 or 2 year old that tries to do all of those things (to the extreme).
This year, instead of focusing on taking the most amazing nature photographs of butterflies, I focused more on taking amazing pictures of my children interacting with the butterflies. And that made me so much happier! I even tried a little facebook live video, but it’s so hard to see the thousands of tiny, tiny butterflies on a grainy live video. Trust me when I say this is an experience you must have first hand!
Butterfly Food
New to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park Butterfly Jungle this year was the opportunity to purchase butterfly food. For $4 a piece, you’ll receive a sizable chunk of watermelon that the butterflies cannot resist. We did not purchase any of the food ourselves, however several people offered us theirs as they were on their way out. It was really cool watching the butterflies fly straight for the food!

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park Butterfly Jungle is going on every day until April 23rd. The Butterfly Jungle is included with admission to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park! Do take note that you may have to wait in line for a bit to go inside. Once inside it’s warm and muggy! But very fun!
