The Most Delicate Event of the Year!
Last Friday the kids and I were invited out to a media preview of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s annual Butterfly Jungle. The event, which lasts just short of one month at the beginning of Spring from March 12th through April 10th, is the San Diego Zoo Safari Parks most delicate event of the year. There is simply nothing quite like the incomparable close-up view of these unique creatures, as thousands of butterflies from more than 20 species flitter around in the walk-through aviary. The Butterfly Jungle is located in the Hidden Jungle – which just so happens to also be home to lush greenery and many exotic birds. Guests of the popular Butterfly Jungle event are encouraged to wear bright colors and move slowly to attract the butterflies. Butterflies may land on a shoulder, head or anywhere else they desire!
Dress Bright! Get Interaction!
The kids and I look forward to the Butterfly Jungle every Spring, it is the perfect time of year and the perfect season to visit the San Diego Zoo Safari Park to see not only the butterflies but all of the animals that live at the Safari Park. My oldest kids were eager to have a butterfly land on them this year so I made sure to dress them in highlighter colors! It is well known that butterflies are attracted to bright, highlighter colors such as orange, red and yellow. So we took a chance and did all of the above!
Tread Carefully!
Although my almost 2 year old daughter was quite a handful inside the exhibit – dragging her cardigan through the muddy water, picking flowers, clomping through the landscape and trying to pick up the butterflies – we still had a great time… a short time…but a great time nonetheless. Thankfully, the Butterfly Jungle is as heavily guarded as art museums are and it isn’t long before someone is (albeit very politely) telling you to chill and tread carefully. Which, as a mom of too many kids I sincerely appreciate because those little rascals never listen to me, but someone else? You betcha they will.
Thankfully, any amount of time spent inside the Butterfly Jungle is magical. There is simply nothing like watching all of the winged beauties float and flitter through the air. And I was so excited when a few landed on each of the kids. It is something everyone must experience!

Butterflies and Sweat?
For some reason I always forget how hot and humid the Butterfly Jungle is, which of course is the perfect environment for the butterflies but not so much for me. Fortunately (for the sake of this post), I was able to stretch our visit out as much as possible before the kids whining, the baby’s deliberate attempts to murder a butterfly and get us all arrested and my sweat beads got to be too much and we had to jam outta there. But of course before leaving we were checked not once, but three times to ensure we contained no butterfly escapees (which begs the question: do people try and steal the butterflies?!).
Before we left, I was however, brave enough for 56 quick seconds of time to keep my eyes off of the children and attempt to take a video to show you guys how cool this place is. Take special note that even though my eyes are off of them I’m still always mothering and nagging to keep their mouths covered while coughing:
The San Diego Zoo Safari Park Butterfly Jungle will be available everyday from March 12th through April 10th and is included with the price of admission. Because of the popularity of the event – especially on the weekends – there are priority viewing Butterfly Jungle tickets available at the Lorikeet Landing exhibit for a nominal fee. Allow me to say, that however you see the butterflies that it is totally worth it and I encourage everyone to go!
