Do you trust me?
Hey guys! It’s Funny Mom Blog contributor Devon here. I want to know…do you trust me? In this case, you should! When I say that Disney’s Aladdin is a current must-see, you should absolutely trust me. I was so lucky to be able to see an early screening of it, and I’ve been so excited to tell everyone about it! Aladdin comes out in theaters everywhere today, May 24th, so make sure you go see it as soon as possible! Disney Aladdin Movie Review
One of the most impressive things about any Disney movie, in my opinion, is the casting. Mena Massoud, as Aladdin, has the perfect charm, while still being so incredibly awkward in certain situations. He is the perfect portrayal of Aladdin, which we’ve all grown up knowing and loving, and it’s so beautiful to see it come to life.
Alongside him, we have Naomi Scott as Jasmine. She’s a slightly different Jasmine than who we’ve known, but only in the best of ways. During the press junket, Naomi explained how the biggest difference is the original Jasmine, in the 1992 animated film, was more passive. This new Jasmine is more prone to speaking up in what she believes in and standing up for what is right. There’s even a new song in this movie about that exact topic, called “Speechless,” and I promise you now, it’s the new “Let It Go,” as it rightfully should be. Naomi sang it so beautifully and you could feel so much emotion and passion as she performs it.
Now, I know a lot of people were conflicted on how to feel about this movie when it was first announced. Robin Williams played Genie in the original film, and people were curious as to how Will Smith was going to go about filling in that role. Well I can promise you, do not be worried, hesitant, or anything in between. Will plays a perfect Genie, paying beautiful respect to the original role, while also putting a twist on it and making this part his own. Will plays such a fun, playful Genie, while also getting straight into the thoughtfulness of the part.
One of my favorite parts of any Disney movie are the songs. The songs stick with you for years and create so many memories (meaning, yes, I still play Disney songs at the loudest volume possible while driving around in my car). The original film’s composer, Alan Menken, returned for this movie, and the soundtrack and score are completely amazing. My favorite song scene, while it’s definitely a hard choice, definitely is stuck between “Speechless” and “Prince Ali;” the entire scene is so much fun, and has you singing and dancing uncontrollably in your seat. “One Jump Ahead” is the same song as we all remember, but is also perfectly redone for this movie. And we couldn’t be talking about the songs without mentioning “A Whole New World.” Naomi and Mena portrayed so much love and passion during that entire scene, and I definitely heard plenty of people (…including myself) sniffling as it played.
The visuals were absolutely stunning, which isn’t surprising as Gemma Jackson was the production designer for this film. During the scenes on the ground, you could see every little detail in every building, plant, room, everything so absolutely spot-on. And even in the scenes above the ground, everything was so lively and detailed, it was just a sensational view.
Overall, ever since I watched this the first time, I’ve been ready to watch it again. Out of all of the live-action Disney movies coming out lately, this has definitely been my favorite so far. Please, trust me, and go see this right away, I promise you’ll love it as much as I do.
