I remember it as if it were just yesterday, playing with my favorite childhood toy. The love I had for my favorite toy was palatable. When I was 3 years old my parents gifted me my most favorite childhood toy – a first edition Cabbage Patch doll with brown curly hair, dimples and a lovable face. I named him Billy (I don’t know why) and I loved him. It was too long ago to recall exactly, but if I do remember correctly my uncle and my mom had to wait in line for hours to purchase Billy. Perhaps that is why I was gifted a boy doll instead of a girl doll, but I couldn’t imagine it any other way. I still love Billy to this day because I still have him. Instead of being front and center on my bed as he did when I was a child, Billy now resides in my closet. Safe and perched above and out of my destructive children’s reach, but still, as always, with me.
As a parent of four children of my own I can only hope to gift them a toy that they will treasure forever just as much as I treasure my Billy.
