Last week I had the opportunity to volunteer for a few hours during my daughters TK Harvest Festival at her new school. I was THRILLED at the opportunity to join her class and see her in action. When my oldest was in Kindergarten I was able to volunteer often because my mom lived nearby, but since she has moved it’s hard to wrestle my husband down to take a day off of work. By luck (and a lot of demanding) he was able to take a few hours of work off so that I could volunteer in her class and I am so thankful for it.
When it was time to purchase a backpack before school started my daughter chose out of hundreds of options a light blue JanSport backpack with yellow banana’s all over it. It was completely random and I loved it. As a bit of an inside joke I wanted to show up to her Harvest festival dressed as a large yellow banana to surprise her but much to my dismay I came to find out that costumes were allowed but only literary inspired costumes. So I stuffed that large yellow banana costume in the closet and took to thinking about funny costumes that my daughter and her friends would easily recognize. And I came up with Mrs. Frizzle from the Magic School Bus!
Thankfully, this costume was super easy to make and I had most of the materials already at home. I splurged a bit on the bus tote ($30), but I felt it was a necessary piece of the funny costume puzzle. I used hand cut felt ($3) to create the planets, lightening bolts and sun and I used star stickers ($3) to cover my dress buttons and as earrings. I attached all of the felt planets on my dress with permanent fabric tape ($7) found at Michael’s (that is in fact not permanent and I can remove them). I found the large stuffed dog toy chameleon to play the part of Liz online at Target ($15). You can easily recreate this costume as well by wearing all black and without the bus tote and stuffed chameleon for less than $15.
I kept my Mrs. Frizzle costume a secret from my kids until the day of the festival. They thought it was hilarious and my daughter was excited to see me in her class. I think the biggest reaction I got from everyone was from the Kindergarten teachers, word is I was “the talk of the lunch room” that day. I love it.
You’ll be happy to hear that my husband wore the giant yellow banana costume while we were trick-or-treating. It was a riot.
