Mr. Kate, a chic fashion and lifestyle blogger who carries a message of expressing yourself through style hosted a glamorous DIY Prom fashion show in the Macy’s at the South Coast Plaza last Saturday April 27th 2013.
The Prom show, which featured designer dresses, eclectic style and a definite sense of whimsy was fun to watch and very educational. I went to my senior prom in 1999 and in just 14 years, the Prom fashion has changed immensely And thank goodness for that fashion change too-I went to my senior Prom in a gawdawful light blue poofy nightmare, complete with too much makeup and nylon tights. Girls today, thanks to fashion leading icons like Mr. Kate have it easy. Expressionism, fun and a sense of carefree whimsy take the lead over poofy stiff dresses.
Mr. Kate gave tips and tricks of the DIY fashionista trade. Such as, sock buns; literally an old sock with the toe cut off rolled under your hair to create a huge rolled bun. Other tips included: different colored shoes, mismatching jewelry, broaches and accessories on bags and shoes, nail polish as paint and face paint decoration with eyeliner.
Mr. Kate’s style, which is laid back and DIY utilizes Reuse, Re-purpose and Expression:
Reuse with your mom’s old broaches to jazz up plain shoes and handbags.
Repurpose with socks as bun holders to create large rolled buns.
Express with mismatched styles, paint and face makeup (she colored on a small heart on one of the models with eye liner on her cheek).
Mr. Kate demonstrated the sock bun on the beautiful Allie Marie Evans. She made it look easy! I definitely want to try this technique out at home. To create a sock bun, cut off the toes of the sock and roll into a donut, then simply roll and tuck your pony tail into the bun and waala!
Mr. Kate’s fun, eclectic fashion style was best displayed when she had one of the models put on two different colored shoes. Both colored shoes complimented her dress. How fun is that?
The below picture also personifies Mr. Kate’s whimsical fashion. The model giving us a playful expression, is wearing a designer short blue dress, combat boots and a fun hairdo that resembles a bow.
This DIY handbag personifies the theme of the day. It is a re-purposed bag that has been painted using nail polish to add funky style.
The overall message that Mr. Kate provided was to have fun and express yourself with whatever it is you choose to wear. Mix styles, mix colors, mix jewelry and have fun with it. I wish I had that message when I went to prom!

Wow prom dresses have come a long way! Pretty styles! Do you know what the price range was? I’m curious what families are spending on dresses these days.

Yeah the dresses are so different than when I went to prom! I can’t even imagine what prom will be like when my little one goes!

I love these dresses. Hubby being a high school teacher, I have been a chaperone and seen some of the prom fashion that I wouldn’t let my daughter wear…however, these are amazing and fun! I can’t wait to see what my little one picks out when that time comes.

Oh, I totally think we should coordinate a blogger prom 😉
I loved looking for the “one” dress for those school dances… but believe it or not I never actually went to prom.
