1980’s T.V. Classic
I grew up in the 1980’s with classic girly Saturday cartoon’s such as Rainbow Bright, Carebears, My Little Pony, Strawberry Shortcake and my favorite of all: Reading Rainbow (and I vaguely remember a show about mall mannequins coming to life after hours?). For the most part, the colors were bright, the animation was fuzzy and the story lines were shallow. However, there were a few educational children’s programming shows that lead the way to a brighter future for Millennials like myself. One of those educational shows was none other than Reading Rainbow.
Take a look! It’s in a book!
Reading Rainbow originally aired on PBS and debuted on June 6, 1983. The show quickly became a popular children’s program that encouraged children to read, because reading was fun! Starring Levar Burton, Reading Rainbow was the 3rd longest running children’s series in PBS history only behind Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and Sesame Street. Each episode of Reading Rainbow centered on a theme from a book, or other children’s literature, which was explored through a number of segments or stories. The show also recommended books for kids to look for when they went to the library.
Butterfly in the sky!
Beginning on August 1, the original Reading Rainbow series will be available to stream on Netflix. You heard that right: Reading Rainbow now streaming on Netflix! How cool is that? Now we can introduce (or reintroduce if you’re already on the ball) our children to a classic Millennial classic children’s program. I am so thrilled to share my love of this show and of reading with the Funny Kids.
Happy Streaming!
