History of Warmth
In the early 1940’s Marie Callender, a mom and renowned baker began baking and selling pies in Huntington Beach, California to supplement her family’s income. Marie would bake the pies at home and her son Don delivered the pies to customers on his bicycle. Don later took control over the pie service and opened the first Marie Callender’s coffee and pie restaurant in Orange, California in 1964. Marie Callender’s has deep-rooted history in American culinary comforts. Now with over 75 restaurants throughout the country, Marie Callender’s expanded to offer convenient frozen foods including their infamous pot pies. There is simply nothing better to fill your belly than a warm, flaky Marie Callenders pot pies.
Golden Flaky Love Affair
Marie Callender’s pot pies and I have had a long-standing love affair for over 15 years now. They are -hands down- my favorite comfort food. I love to curl up with a good book (or good trashy tv show let’s be honest) and a chicken pot pie, they fill me up and warm my belly on cold, winter nights.
Feeding a family of 6 on a budget
Always innovative, Marie Callender’s now offers large family sized pot pies in addition to the individual sized pot pies. Feeding a family of 6 on a budget doesn’t have to mean pasta every night, especially when you shop at Walmart. I was able to feed my entire family a dinner consisting of warm flaky Marie Callender’s chicken pot pie and a berry & honey pound cake dessert for under 20 bucks!
Savory & Sweet = The Perfect Combination
I love pairing warm savory comfort foods with sweet fruit desserts, so I whipped up a very simple lemon pound cake recipe that I would love to share with you!
Berry & Honey Pound Cake Recipe
Ingredients
1 frozen lemon pound cake
1 cup fresh strawberries, sliced
1/2 cup fresh blueberries
2 large dollops of refrigerated whipped topping
drizzle of honey
Directions
Slice two large slices of thawed lemon pound cake (approximately 1/2 inch thick)
Place one large dollop of whipped topping on one slice of pound cake and “sandwich” with other slice of pound cake
Place one large dollop of whipped topping on top
Sprinkle (or pour!) fresh fruit on top
Drizzle with honey
Enjoy!
The tartness of the fresh berries in combination with the mellow lemon pound cake and sweet honey is out of this world. Below is a step-by-step picture collage, as you can see the recipe is very simple!
