Kaiser Permanente Orange County is striving to change the doctor and patient relationship <— that is a mind boggling statement, I understand. We’ve all been so accustomed to the traditional manner in which we see and talk to our doctors that the notion of anything different seems downright unattainable. We recently had the opportunity to tour Kaiser Permanente Orange newest medical offices and facility in La Habra with a tour by Family Practice doctor Kevin Liao (pictured below).
The brand new and state-of-the-art medical facility located in the heart of La Habra is the flagship concept of the direction that Kaiser Permanente is headed. Here’s why:
Open Concept Design
All Kaiser Permanente Orange County medical offices have been designed with an open concept, however the new facilities are taking the open concept design to a whole new level. The entire first floor of the La Habra medical offices is open with sections for children and meetings set off to the side. It’s the open concept that has created a community atmosphere that is cutting edge yet comfortable.
Patient Rooms
The new state-of-the art patient rooms at the La Habra medical facility are designed around the central nurses and doctors station or “hub”. With a large monitor located within the “hub” that reads the patients in the rooms and a small glass office for the doctors. Everything is visible and both the doctors and nurses are highly attainable for the patients. Because of the monitor, every nurse can answer specific questions as the arise. There are no more long winding hallways with tiny rooms. The new layout reminded me of a birthing and delivering center.
The new patient rooms also have state-of-the-art technology including a weighing patient table. Skip standing on the scale, because as you see your doctor the table in which you sit on will do the weighing for you. The patient rooms are also larger now because there is no longer a bulky computer station for the doctor. Kaiser Permanente Orange County doctors at the La Habra medical facility use tablets that they carry with them.

Technology
Modern technology aims to make our lives easier and faster so that we may go on living our best lives. Kaiser Permanente Orange County is at the helm of making their patients lives easier with the use of technology.
Check-in: No longer are patients required to stand in line and check in. Now, patients can easily check in to their appointments by kiosk or the KP app. It’s a giant time saver.
The Doctor and Patient Relationship
So what does the open concept and cutting-edge technology have to do with the doctor and patient relationship? By creating a community atmosphere where nurses and doctors are readily available and visible, the doctor is no longer that traditional service worker but someone that breaks down the stiff barrier and provides the utmost friendly health care.
