Do Something Different For Your Next BBQ!
I am always on the lookout for new cool food ideas that’ll change up the regular routine. Because, who likes the regular food routine anyway? Sometimes I browse the seemingly endless rows of pins on Pinterest for ideas and inspiration and although I cannot pinpoint exactly where I was inspired for a hot dog toppings bar, alas I was inspired and I am in love with it. I have to be honest and admit that I’m not the biggest hot dog fan…well, until now that is. Putting varied (somewhat) gourmet toppings on a regular hot dog catapults the ordinary dog into the extraordinary fancy dog. And now I’m going to share with you how I did it!
Color, Texture & Taste!
My goal for the toppings I randomly chose for my hot dog toppings bar was color, texture and pops of fresh summer taste. Nothing says summer like a fresh corn relish and sauteed peppers to me. I chose to include bright green avocado and green peppers, bright red peppers and tomatoes, black beans and yellow fresh corn. The very best part of a hot dog toppings bar is that you can include anything. Anything!
Hot Dog Toppings Recipe
I mean, I don’t even want to call this a recipe, but I guess I will!
Ingredients:
1 Package of your favorite Hot Dogs
1 Package of your favorite Hot Dog Buns
1/2 Sliced Green Pepper
1/2 Sliced Red Pepper
1/2 Sliced Yellow Onion
1 Jar of Sliced Jalapenos
1 Can of Black Beans
1 Ear of Yellow Corn
1/2 Roma Tomato
1/2 Sliced Avocado
Olive Oil for sauteing, salt & pepper to taste
Directions:
- Heat the teaspoon (or less) of olive oil in a frying pan and saute the red pepper, green pepper and onion until they are soft. Place in small bowl.
- Cook the black beans in a sauce pan until soft. Place in a small bowl.
- Boil water in large pot, add corn and boil 5-7 minutes until corn kernels are soft. Place ear of corn in an ice bath to cool and stop cooking. Use a large sharp knife to slice corn kernels off. Dice red pepper and green pepper. Place in a small bowl.
- Halve a avocado and slice. Dice a Roma tomato. Place in a small bowl.
Serve your toppings in a variety of bowls in different shapes and colors just for fun!
