You may think that with a combination of four children and a bachelor’s psychology degree with an emphasis on child psychology under my belt, I would be some sort of an expert at anything related to children or childcare. However, most exuberantly, I assure you that I, in fact, am not an expert. If there is one thing that I have learned about raising children, it’s that everything and everyone is different. Instead of calling myself an expert at parenting, I like to call myself a ready and willing student of my four teacher children. I have learned more about life from them than any fancy school could ever provide. Lessons such as compromise, stress management, patience and perhaps even a slight hostage-negotiation tactic or two have given me the confidence to be able to handle any sticky toddler situation.
I am a firm believer that each child is different and should be raised accordingly – because, honestly, what works for one child may not work for another. When my oldest was a baby and that glorified, perfect only child who never did anything wrong, ate everything I gave to him and learned new things at the speed of lightning, I was taken aback by having a second child who had a harder time remembering things and was pickier about what she ate. I learned to try new recipes with new ways of providing her the nutrition she needed and supplying more time for her to learn. With the addition of my third child, I learned patience and the ability to truly listen. My third child is a demanding person. He is also the world’s biggest talker. He never stops talking! Now that my last child is a toddler, she has become my ultimate teacher. I am learning the most important lesson of all from her, and that is to savor every moment because, as hard and as frustrating and as tiring as toddlers can be, they grow up so quickly, and I remind myself almost nightly that they’ll all be too old too soon.
