A few weeks ago I posted a recipe for Easy Butternut Squash Baby Food, this time I am excited to bring this easy sweet potato baby food recipe to you. Making baby food is not difficult, in fact – it’s so easy your younger children can help you do it. Not to forget to mention that making your own baby food is super inexpensive. If you purchase in-season fruits and vegetables you can create large quantities of baby food for pennies on the dollar. Although I like to keep flavors simple, you can mix different foods together or even add spices (like cinnamon).
Sweet Potatoes are the first “orange” vegetable I have introduced to each of my children. They are sweet but not too sweet (to avoid creating a sweet tooth). I create all of my homemade baby foods slightly thick, so I can water them down as needed after they have defrosted from freezing. Sweet Potatoes are a great source of beta-carotene, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, thiamin and iron.
Sweet Potato or Yam?
Have you ever wondered what the difference was between a sweet potato and a yam? You can find two types of sweet potatoes at your local market: moist-fleshed sweet potatoes have a bright orange flesh that is sweet when cooked. Dry-fleshed sweet potatoes have an ivory colored flesh that is dry when cooked and are less sweet. The moist-fleshed, orange in color, sweeter potato is a yam and the dry-fleshed, ivory in color, less sweet potato is a sweet potato. I cook the dry-fleshed, ivory sweet potato.
Ingredients:
2-3 medium sized sweet potatoes (or yam if you prefer)
A very small amount of water
Several 8oz Glad containers
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Poke a few holes in the potatoes with a fork
Bake the potatoes for 1 hour on a baking sheet
Remove from oven and let cool
Peel off the skin
Chop potato in to large chunks
Blend in food processor into a puree
Add 1 tablespoon of water as needed
After the sweet potato puree has cooled, place in 8oz glad containers and freeze. Sweet potatoes can remain frozen for up to 4 months. To defrost, simply put the frozen potato container in the refrigerator overnight. Warm gently before serving.
