Are You Ready For An Amazing Flying Elephant Film?
So…are you ready for an amazing flying elephant film? That’s a silly question because of course you are! The 1941 classic film, Dumbo has been re-imagined for today’s audience and will be flying across screens nationwide starting Friday March 29th 2019. Directed by Tim Burton, this “new” Dumbo takes the original story and expands it, giving it even more heart, warmth and background than the original! Dumbo Movie Review
Funny Mom Fact: Dumbo was one of the first feature films finished at Disney’s new Burbank studio lot, which opened in 1940—it was built thanks to profits from “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
The “Official” Description:
“From Disney and visionary director Tim Burton, the all-new grand live-action adventure “Dumbo” expands on the beloved classic story where differences are celebrated, family is cherished and dreams take flight. Circus owner Max Medici (Danny DeVito) enlists former star Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell) and his children Milly (Nico Parker) and Joe (Finley Hobbins) to care for a newborn elephant whose oversized ears make him a laughingstock in an already struggling circus. But when they discover that Dumbo can fly, the circus makes an incredible comeback, attracting persuasive entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton), who recruits the peculiar pachyderm for his newest, larger-than-life entertainment venture, Dreamland. Dumbo soars to new heights alongside a charming and spectacular aerial artist, Colette Marchant (Eva Green), until Holt learns that beneath its shiny veneer, Dreamland is full of dark secrets.”
So…Did We Like It?
I’m going to be quite honest here (and yet funny…because hello?) and tell you that I didn’t have high hopes for this film. Partly because of the previews and partly because I was afraid that Tim Burton would take this beloved story into a dark and twisted place.
HOWEVER
Allow me to say that I was quite wrong! This film is gorgeous, entertaining, heartfelt and even funny. I adored it. Tim Burton’s “Dumbo” retains the heart of the original film and expands the human connection stories. You and your family will love it.
Funny Fact #2: Filmmakers felt strongly about featuring real circus performers to infuse a sense of authenticity to their circus. Fourth-generation circus performer Kristian Kristof from Hungary was hired to share not only his extensive knowledge of the circus, but his international circus connections. The result was a multicultural array of performers, including jugglers, clowns, knife throwers, contortionists, a dog trainer and more.
Now…Is It “Kid Friendly”
I brought my 8, 6 and 4 year old with me to the prescreening of “Dumbo”. Knowing full well that the original 1941 movie made me cry when I was little. I even brought them in fear of Tim Burton taking the story to a dark and twisted place (like he does…don’t hate me it’s true!). But I am confident in saying that YES Dumbo is absolutely kid friendly. It is happy, cheery, exciting and just a little bit scary. Your children will love it.
Dumbo is in theaters nationwide Friday March 29th 2019!
