On January 15, 2013, Disney Interactive announced “Disney Infinity” at a press conference in Hollywood, California. I was fortunate to attend the exclusive press event at the El Capitan Theater and experience the excitement surrounding this new ambitious adventure firsthand.
Disney Infinity is a revolutionary open-ended interactive gaming platform that gives the player the opportunity to use their limitless creativity and imagination to create stories and play experiences starring characters from The Walt Disney Company and Pixar Animation Studios. Just imagine the ability to play with your favorite Disney characters without limits.
Disney Infinity pushes the boundaries of technology and once again puts Disney Interactive in the forefront of technological advances. In Disney Infinity, there are no rules and players are only limited by their imaginations.
John Pleasants, co-president of Disney Interactive says: “With Disney Infinity, you will be able to go into the worlds of your favorite characters or you can bring these characters together in a world of your choosing to help them build, create and play in any way you can imagine. Disney Infinity is not just a single game, it is a platform that will grow, and diversify, and improve with time.”
Players will place real-world interactive figure characters, power discs and Play Set pieces on a device called the “Disney Infinity Base” to activate original, story-driven adventures in the game worlds, also known as “Play Sets,” of “Monsters University,” “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “The Incredibles.” In each “Play Set” players will assume their favorite Disney/Pixar characters that unlock true to form worlds and character attributes. Such as Sully’s renowned ability to scare or Captain Jack Sparrows sword swinging talents and Mr. Incredibles heroic rescues to battle enemies, solve puzzles, overcome obstacles and complete a variety of other quests.
As players advance through each adventure, they will collect characters, vehicles, upgrades, gadgets and more that they can save to a virtual “Toy Box.” At any time, players can access their personal “Toy Box” and use the items to create one-of-a-kind Disney adventures featuring any combination of characters, environments and items across all franchises.
The Disney Infinity Platform terminology:
Play Sets – property game worlds. At the June 2013 launch the Play Sets will include “Monsters University,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” and “The Incredibles” as well as a few SECRET Play Sets as well. My prediction of the SECRET Play Sets are: “Toy Story,” “Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Phineas and Ferb”. Each Play Set will have its own world and game play.
Toy Box – virtual holding spot for the goods you collect as you play. Players can access their “Toy Box” and build and customize their own unique virtual world using their favorite characters, vehicles, settings and accessories.
Disney Infinity Base – the gaming device in which the figures are placed.
Character figures – 17 character figures that are artistically beautiful and true to form. When each figure is placed on the Disney Infinity Base it unlocks the accompanying Play Set and the player assumes that figures characteristics.
Interactive Pieces – Initially a line of 40 collectible interactive pieces will be introduced that allow players to expand and customize their play experiences.
Power Discs – Interactive discs can be placed on the Infinity base to power up characters and “Toy Box” with unique powers, customizations and gadgets.
Gaming Platforms:
Disney Infinity will be global and across all platforms. Console, Mobile and Online. Nintendo Wii™ and Nintendo Wii-U, Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PLAYSTATION3 computer entertainment system, PC, as well as an accompanying mobile experience.
