A Cinderella For A New Generation
Released in theaters nationwide today Friday March 13th 2015, the new Walt Disney Studios Cinderella is a classic Disney fairy tale personified. Full of rich visuals, this film will have you revisiting a childhood classic for a new generation. What the new Cinderella brings is a deeper emotional connection to the people and the story of the classic fairy tale. Long gone are the sing song talking animals and in comes decadent wardrobes and a new sense of encouragement with the saying “Have Courage and Be Kind”. We attended an advanced screening of the film, all opinions are my own.
The story of Cinderella (Lily James) follows the fortunes of young Ella whose beloved family is torn apart after her mother passes away. In an attempt to gain a 2nd chance at happiness, Ella’s father remarries a woman whom becomes her stepmother. Ella welcomes her new Stepmother
(Cate Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophie McShera) into the charming family country home. However, when Ella’s father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Soon, she is forced to become their servant, disrespected, covered in ashes and spitefully renamed Cinderella. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella will not give in to despair nor despise those who mistreat her, and she continues to remain positive, determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.” Upon happenstance at a chance meeting in the forest, Cinderella meets the gorgeous Prince Charming (Richard Madden) and is determined to sneak away to the royal ball. The rest is magical.
Have Courage, Be Kind
The 2015 Cinderella story line follows closely to the classic Disney fairy tale with the exclusion of Jaq and Gus (the singing mice) and the inclusion of the powerful mantra “Have Courage and Be Kind”. The saying promotes a female empowerment in my opinion, in 2015 women should be encouraged to be strong and have courage but also to be soft and to be kind simultaneously. It’s certainly something I try very hard to teach my children.
Should You Take Your Young Children To See Cinderella?
Yes, absolutely says this Funny Mom. Not only will they be able to follow along with the classic fairy tale story line, they will love the visual effects and the strong moral of the story. However, the passing away scene of Cinderella’s mother is quite sad, unlike the classic Cinderella the death scenes are not glossed over but I will say as a very aware parent who is very careful about what I allow my children to watch on television – I did not mind the passing away scenes. My Cinderella review is two-thumbs way up.

Great to hear what you think . . . this is Anikah’s all time favorite Disney story & Princess and I’ve been hoping it’s not too mature or scary for her. I think we’ll go over spring break.
