Open Ocean + Salty Air
There is nothing I love more than spending a day outside under the sun on the open ocean. The smell of the salty ocean air and watching the blue glistening tide always has me at hello. When The Aquarium of the Pacific invited my children and I on a whale watching tour to hunt the infamous Blue Whales migrate we jumped at the opportunity (all opinions are our own). blue whales at the aquarium of the pacific
Since I am on a quest of have a Summer of Adventure, I knew that a whale watching tour with Harbor Breeze Cruises would be the perfect addition to our summer. It was the very first time my 3 youngest children (ages 8, 7 and 5) had ever been on a whale watching tour and on a boat! So it was an exciting morning for everyone.
All About That Giant Whale
The Blue Whale are the largest animals known to have ever lived on Earth. Let that sink in…the largest animals on Earth!! Here are some more insanely interesting facts about those blue guys:
- A blue whale’s tongue alone can weigh as much as an elephant—its heart as much as an automobile.
- The Blue Whales average life span in the wild is 80-90 years
- They can grow to be up to 100 feet long and upwards of 200 tons
- They live on a diet composed nearly exclusively of krill
- Blue Whales only look truly blue underwater. Above water they take on a greyish appearance
- Blue Whales only come up for air at the surface every 8-12 minutes
- A blowhole spray can go up in the air over 30 feet!
Ahoy There!
My kids and I had a really fun time aboard the boat. We even caught up to a giant Blue Whale knicknamed “Kinko” because of it’s dorsal fin. I had never before actually seen a whale while on a whale watching tour, so it was quite exciting! The boat were were aboard was big and roomy and offered stadium like seating in the front, perfect for families.
