This weekend, we visited the America’s Family Pet Expo at the Orange County fairgrounds with friends. The weather was perfect and it was such a fun day!
As we walked in, we received programs and loot bags. Thank goodness for the loot bags! So many info pamphlets, business cards and goodies! We saw ALL kinds of animals. The best part, we got to interact with them…pet, hold, brush, feed, play with, talk to, listen to and learn about them.
First thing on our agenda was the police dog demonstrations. Somehow, we missed the first 3 demonstrations as we were sidetracked by all the other booths along the way. How could we possibly just walk past all those pup and kitty faces? Thankfully, the demonstrations were about every hour. The police dogs were so well trained! It’s amazing to me how the dogs can switch between work mode and family dog mode with just a one word command.
There were so many breeds of dogs and cats, rescue organizations and cool pet products. There was a cat wheel. Yep! That’s a big hamster wheel for cats. And the cats loved it! Who knew?!? There was specialty food and digestive care products, coat, skin and tooth care products and of course fun things like fancy collars and pet clothes.
The food vendors for people were pretty darn good too! We stuck with the ever so healthy snack options like ice cream shakes, popcorn, lemonade, pretzels and pizza. Oh and they had hamster wheels for people too! Ok, well they were inflatable wheels on water. Can’t forget the bungee trampolines too.
In between snacks, we saw some great presentations and demonstrations like Splash Dogs where dogs jump off a dock into a pool after a toy. Some of them jumping nearly 23 feet! There was a bird show with perches for the birds to fly from way overhead including a singing bird, a super cool eagle and a stubborn California Condor. Surprisingly, the cat show judging was just as interesting for the kids. They liked acting like experts in the field and cheering on their favorites.
The baby donkeys were so, so, so sweet. The llamas had personality to spare and it was neat to see how their fur is spun into yarn. We missed the pig races, but saw the mini pigs in their pens with their little wagging tails and wet noses!
We ended the day in the fish area at the touch tank, watching glowing jelly fish dance under black light and with a new friend. Thanks to Desiree for the tickets and thanks to America’s Family Pet Expo for sharing the wonders of the relationships between animals and people.
