As a mom of 4 children ages 7 years old, 4 years old, 2 years old and a baby that is almost 6 months old that all sleep through the night I can say that I am somewhat of a get-the-baby-to-sleep professional. I learned within just a few short days of having my first newborn son home from the hospital that sleep wasn’t just important, it was vital for survival. Here are my 5 tips to get your baby to sleep so that you can get a restful nights sleep.
1. Create a calming atmosphere
At least 1/2 hour before bedtime, my husband and I create a calm atmosphere in our home with hushed voices, lulled noises and all appliances off. We talk softly, move slowly and allow our bodies and the children’s bodies to start to relax.
2. Create a bedtime routine
Creating a bedtime routine allows children to know what is coming next. And when they know what is coming next there is no surprises and is much more conducive to creating a calming and relaxing mood.
3. Provide a blanket and a Lovey (if they are old enough)
Providing a blanket gives warmth and a lovey for bedtime (if they are old enough), I believe this helps children feel safe, warm and secure in their beds. Lovies (each of my older children have one) provide comfort when they are alone.
4. Put your child to sleep in their bed when they are sleepy but not asleep
Putting your children down to sleep when they are still slightly awake will teach them to fall asleep on their own.
5. If your children do happen to wake up during the night, put them back to sleep quietly
This was probably the easiest and hardest for me to learn how to do. Easy because I take a long time to wake up and being woken up in the middle of the night I’m not very coherent in the first place. Hard because I love my children and I want to snuggle and kiss and chew on their chubby cheeks all the time. However, limiting interaction in the middle of the night will teach them to sleep through the night and not crave night time affection.
