America’s oldest amusement park is having its 3rd annual Boysenberry Festival from now until April 12th! My oldest son and I attended the delicious festival as guests last weekend and we had a very festive, fun time. We went as a special mother and son day out to enjoy the festivities. I was most excited to taste all of the Boysenberry delicacies and he was most excited to ride all of the “big” rides we can’t ride when we have his little brother and sisters with us. Thankfully, we were both able to get what we wanted – I ate tons of food and we went on all the “big” rides he wanted, it was awesome!
The Knotts Berry Farms Boysenberry Festival is an ultimate celebration of spring and of the nostalgic history of Knott’s Berry Farm’s roots (literally!). This immersive festival honors the delectable berry that started it all in inventive and delicious ways. Did you know that all Boysenberries in the world can trace their roots back to Knott’s Berry Farm? In the 1930’s Walter Knott harvested the boysenberry, a cross between a loganberry, red raspberry and blackberry, and named the new berry after its originator Rudolph Boysen! During the Boysenberry Festival you can even purchase a Boysenberry plant to take home.
There is tons to do, see and most importantly eat during the festival. I have rounded up the 5 most important reasons to visit the Boysenberry Festival today.
Wine and Craft Brew Garden
As part of the festival, the Wine and Craft Brew Garden, located inside of Ghost Town’s Wilderness Dance Hall, features an assortment of wine and craft brew labels, in addition to a variety of boysenberry inspired gourmet food that’s just bursting with tons of berry flavor. All of these tastings require an additional fee, however it’s totally worth it to enjoy a little shady, cool refresher during the day.
Boysenberry Filled Churros
Of course Knotts Berry Farm is most well known for their delicious funnel cakes, but did you know that their stuffed churro’s rock? They are so fluffy and most and the combination of sweet churro with Boysenberry jam was out of this world. I gobbled that thing right on up. And by the way, how rad is the picture I took of the woman making the churro with Boysenberry Jam? That’s my photojournalism working on point right there 😉
Boysenberry Flautas
I’m not going to lie, I had no idea what a flauta was before tasting this one and now I’m a fan. A HUGE fan of boysenberry flautas. They are fried taquito shaped boysenberry filled sticks of heaven. I did not share these two. I ate them before my son could see them. And again, the picture I took of the woman frying my flautas is on point 😉
Wings in Boysenberry BBQ Sauce
Dude, hands down the best BBQ sauce I’ve ever had. Unfortunately my son ate most of our wings, but I did get a little nibble and it was delish. It’s not as sweet as you would expect, but just enough sweet and tart to make these wings taste like BBQ’d perfection.
Fried Alligator with Boysenberry Aioli
I know what you’re thinking and believe me, I thought the same thing. Who eats this stuff?! I do apparently, well now I do. Given the opportunity to try something out of the ordinary, I went for it and I was surprised at how tasty it was. The fried alligator tasted a lot like a chewy, salty chicken and the boysenberry aioli was a sweet mix to the fried alligator. Totally worth trying!
These are not all of the special Boysenberry treats to be had during Knotts Berry Farms Boysenberry Festival of course, but these were my absolute favs. Also during the Boysenberry Festival are other special live entertainment attractions such as music, dancing, pie eating contests and so so so much more. There really isn’t a reason to not go, so go!
