The Los Angeles County Fair was first held for 5 days in October in 1922 in a former beet field in Pomona California. Having come a long ‘beet’ way in the past 91 years, the LA County Fair is now one of the largest county fairs in the nation lasting over 31 fun filled days and attracts over 1.5 million people every year.
Unleash Your Inner Fair From August 30th through September 29th
Modern County Fairs, specifically the LA County Fair, have gained the reputation of offering crazy novelty food items that are just waiting to be tried that will blow your mind and knock your socks off. Always innovative and interesting, the fair food at the LA County Fair is best deep fried, battered and barbecued. Spaghetti ice cream anyone?
I was invited as a member of the eat-all-you-can-eat media to taste the fabulous foods of the LA County Fair. These were my hands down favorite foods that I tasted that night. I should have probably written down where each of these foods were from and how much they cost, but I was too distracted by my expanding gut. Sorry.
As if you needed more than one reason to visit the LA Fair, I have come up with 5:
1. Blooming Onions
– Crispy and lightly breaded and totally to die for – the dipping sauce is the winner in this dish. I could go for a vat full of the stuff.
2. “Dirty” Chips
– They were dirty delicious. The potato fried “chips” were crunchy, the chipotle sauce was spicy and the rest of the gunk was flippin’ delicious. I have been having dreams about this dish since eating it. You CANNOT leave the Fair without order some for yourself.
3. A Krispy Kreme Hamburger
– It’s sweet, it’s savory it’s a flippin’ krispy kreme donut and a hamburger in one. Not quite my thing, it’s still totally worth trying once. This is a LA County Fair exclusive and is from Chicken Charlie.
4. Brisket Sundae
– Hands down, this little gem was the star of the evening throughout the guests at the tasting. Well, at least between my friends and I. Made to appear like an ice cream sundae, the mashed potatoes were creamy (and probably made from a box) and the brisket was tender, tender, tender. Don’t forget the “cherry” on top!
5. Strawberry Smoothie
– We ended our tasting evening with these super creamy and delicious strawberry smoothies from this happy gal. They were sweet, but not too sweet and refreshing. Totally perfect for the warm Pomona weather.
