Our Irvine Park Railroad History
The very first time we visited the Irvine Park Railroad was during the pumpkin patch in 2007. My son was only 9 months old at the time and we were invited to go to the park by friends. I had no idea what to expect and the friend that invited us was slim on details. I envisioned a tiny train that only kids would ride, similar to what is inside of shopping malls. I remember expressing concern that my baby was too little to ride alone and I she said something along the line of “oh no, you can ride too”. But other than that I had no idea what I was in store for and I had no idea that the Irvine Park Railroad would become so important and so sentimental to my family and me.
Since that fateful play date invitation to the Irvine Park Railroad pumpkin patch in 2007 we have visited for every holiday, several birthdays, hundreds of play dates and loads of no-reason-at-all trips in between. Although the Irvine Park Railroad pumpkin patch is my all time favorite, I adore going any time of the year.
The 2015 Irvine Park Railroad Pumpkin Patch
The 2007 Irvine Park Railroad pumpkin patch was much smaller by today’s standards. Back then there were a few activity stands, loads of gorgeous pumpkins and of course the train and hay ride. Now having been open for 10 years, today’s Irvine Park Railroad pumpkin patch has grown exponentially with more games, better prizes, more activities and better pumpkins.
What can you expect from the 2015 Irvine Park Railroad Pumpkin Patch?
- Hay Ride!
- Train Ride!
- Carnival Games!
- Face Painting!
- Cookie Decorating!
- Balloon Animals!
- Haunted House!
- Mining For Gold!
- Tractor Races!
- Picture Stands!
- Stick Ponies!
- 2 Bounce Houses!
- Snack Bar Concessions!
- Piles and piles of gorgeous pumpkins!
Every Ticket = Family Memories Made
Several of the Irvine Park Railroad pumpkin patch activities cost money, or tickets to be more specific. Each ticket costs $5 or you can purchase a book of 15 tickets for $60 (a savings of $15). If you have 2 children and your children would like to do each activity that would cost you (based on 2 adults and 2 children) 26 tickets or $130. Since I have 14,000 children and a limited amount of tickets given to me for review purposes, we usually do the kids favorite activities first which is typically the face painting (for 2), gold mining (for 1), train ride (for 6), cookie decorating (for 3) and the carnival games (for 3 or 4). Sometimes I can get the hay ride in instead, but not always. It can quickly become a pricey day, but it doesn’t have to be. You can save money by having your children choose their favorite activities, by packing a lunch to eat by the lake and by purchasing books of tickets instead of individually priced ones. At the end of the day however much money you do or do not spend is completely worth the great family memories you will make.
You Carry it & I Buy it
We have an Eaglin Family tradition that started when I was a kid that I have passed on down to my own children that you must be able to carry your own pumpkin in order to buy it. This works out great for me because I’m not purchasing expensive pumpkins and the kids love it because they like to test their strength and get the biggest pumpkin they can. Of course this may all come back to bite me when my boys are huge and pick out $100 pumpkins…but traditions are traditions!
The Irvine Park Railroad Pumpkin Patch will be open every day from now until Halloween. The Irvine Park Railroad will open at 10am until just before Halloween, when they’ll open at 9am instead. If you’re shy of large crowds like I am I suggest going during the weekday morning or mid afternoon after the school groups.
