One-Dish-Meal History
Derived from the French word “casse” meaning case in English, casseroles have been an American one-dish-meal staple since the early 20th century. However, Casseroles popularity peaked in the 1970’s when the fast and easy home cooked meal became prevalent in American standards of cooking. Casseroles can contain almost any ingredient already stocked in the kitchen, from meats, cheeses to vegetables and every thing in between all cooked in lightweight metal or glassware in the oven. Despite casseroles popularity peak in the 70’s the one-dish-meals seem to be taking on a resurgence today. Slowly shedding it’s frumpy reputation, new casserole recipes containing trendy healthful ingredients such as quinoa are emerging on the foodie circuit therefore charming up the reputation a bit. In the end, casseroles will more than likely always be a family meal staple as they are easy to create and they have the ability to feed lots of people on a small budget.
Family deviations to an American food staple
One of the best things about casseroles are that you can literally put almost anything in to them and your creation will more than likely turn out delicious each and every time. I also love that each family has their own deviations of casserole recipes. Growing up the recipes that were passed down to my mother were casserole recipes like our breakfast casserole recipe we have every Christmas morning. One of my all time favorite recipes is green bean casserole, containing only 3 ingredients (green beans, mushroom soup and crunchy friend onions) and usually served at Thanksgiving.
