For me, one of the best things to have come out of the quarantine was the general feeling of getting back to the simple things. Things like baking bread, sleeping in, gardening, knitting and home diy projects were in the forefront of my priorities as opposed to task lists and errands, endless meetings and tight schedules. Just like families all over the world, my Funny Family got really into gardening during the Covid-19 quarantine of 2020. I mean, it was inevitable with alllllll that time just at home. In an effort to enjoy the sunshine in our own backyard and to give the kids a chore they could help with easily, my husband and I decided to try out our green thumbs and create our own family garden.
We started our family garden with string beans and flowers and we have added to the vegetable collection ever since then. Here is our simple guide to family garden started and what we’ve learned so far.
Easy Steps To Create Your Family Garden
- Choose Where Your Garden Area
Whether you live in an apartment, condo, suburban house or a huge farm, take a look at your space and decide where you want your garden to be. Choose a spot that receives a fair amount of sun for a good portion of the day and is relatively close to a water source. - Prep Your Garden Area and Build
If you are in a home with a yard, prep the area where your garden will be by removing grass and weeds. If you are in an apartment, ensure that your balcony is sturdy enough to hold your balcony garden. If you’re interested in a raised garden bed, build one or purchase one. There are many garden options! - Research
This step is the most time consuming in my personal opinion. We suggest you go online and research the best times of year to plant certain seeds in your region of the world. We also highly suggest you research cross pollination and gardening companions. - Go Shopping
Purchase your soil, seeds and gardening tools. All you really need is a decent shovel and a watering can IMHO. - Add Your Soil
Purchase the best soil you can but no stress. - Place Your Seeds According to Seed Packet Instructions
Certain plants need specific depth and width requirements - Add a Layer of Mulch
The mulch will help retain moisture in the soil. Check out this great guide on the best mulch for your garden found on Better Homes and Gardens. - Water Extensively!
Important Side Notes:
Keeping in mind that this is a family garden and therefore a family activity, we would highly advise that everyone help in the planting and maintaining of your garden. A little bit of dirty hands is a good days work! Your children will love being naturally rewarded when the seeds they helped plant finally sprout. Which brings me to important side note #2: Be patient!! Some seeds can take up to 2 months to show signs of growth above the soil. So don’t give up and stay vigilant in your garden maintaince.
